Vivian Cheruyiot Predicts Gold Medal Success for Kenya in Women’s 5,000m at World Championships
Former Olympic Champion Vivian Cheruyiot, who clinched the 5,000m title at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, has expressed her confidence in Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, tipping them as potential gold medalists at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
In an exclusive interview with Nation Sport at the Nyayo National Stadium, Cheruyiot acknowledged the significant impact of Kipyegon’s recent feat of breaking the World Record in France this year, emphasizing the paradigm shift in the race.
“I firmly believe that Kenya can reclaim dominance in the women’s 5,000m event, especially with the inclusion of Faith Kipyegon, who has taken the race to a whole new level by shattering the world record. Although Diamond League races differ from championships, Kipyegon’s exceptional performances demonstrate her ability to excel and secure victory,” expressed the former 5,000m Olympic Champion.
Cheruyiot acknowledged the formidable competition expected from Ethiopia but stressed that teamwork would be crucial for the Kenyan athletes to achieve success in Budapest.
Reflecting on her own career, Cheruyiot shared the invaluable role that participating in multiple races played in her development as an athlete. “During my time on the track, I used to compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races, which greatly contributed to my success. One race focused on speed, while the other enhanced my endurance,” she revealed.
Although Cheruyiot has been on a hiatus due to maternity leave, she eagerly anticipates her return in September of this year. Her triumphant Olympic gold medal in the 5,000m event at Rio 2016 came on the heels of another gold in the 10,000m race at the 2015 World Championships held in Beijing.
Among the Kenyan representatives in Budapest will be Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Ferguson Rotich, Emmanuel Korir, and Kipngetich Ng’eno, who will be participating in the highly anticipated 800m race.
With Cheruyiot’s vote of confidence and the stellar lineup of Kenyan athletes set to compete, the stage is set for an exhilarating battle for gold at the World Championships.
