President William Ruto has slammed Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga following his remarks of organizing mass action if the government does not lower the cost of living.
Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of the Nairobi River Commission at Korogocho in Nairobi, the President went bare knuckled on the Azimio chief outrightly maintaining that the government would not be cowed by his threats.
He told off the opposition team saying they could organize as many rallies as they possible can, but his administration would still remain undeterred.
“I want to tell our brothers, relax, na wasituuzie uoga, sisi si watu wa kuuziwa uoga. Kila Mkenya ako na haki katika taifa letu la Kenya na malengo yetu ni kuhakikisha Kenya inaenda mbele,” he stated.
“Hao majamaa watulize boli. Ati wanataka kututisha na maandamano, watafanya maandamano mpaka watachoka (they want to threaten us with demonstrations…they will demonstrate until they get tired).”
The Head of State reiterated his remarks vowing to ensure that every citizen across the nation upholds the law and abides by the Constitution.
“As the President, I am going to make sure we avoid and banish impunity; there is nobody who is going to threaten Kenya with impunity. Everybody must respect the law and this country will be governed by the rule of law,” President Ruto said.
“Kenya is going to be a country run on the basis of the rule of law and the Constitution and all citizens have an equal opportunity and no citizen is greater than another.”
In regard to the cost of living, the President rubbished the claims by Azimio accusing them of double-speak and being the perpetrators of the ailing economy since they were part and parcel of the former regime.
He sought to reassure members of the public that Kenya Kwanza will endeavour to lower the cost of living and reduce maize flour prices, urging the opposition to give them a little breathing space.
“Nataka niwaambie wale majamaa, mlikuwa na miaka tano ya handshake na mambo yenu, bei ya unga ikafika Ksh.230 saa hii tumeteremsha imefika Ksh.180. Watupatie nafasi itafika Ksh.140 alafu Ksh. 120…wawache kimbelembele, walikuwa na nafasi yao wakaharibu,” the President stated.
The response by President Ruto comes hours after Mr. Odinga threatened demonstrations across the country if the government does not reduce the cost of living within a span of two weeks.
