We Should Protect Wetlands

Wetlands provide important goods and services that support human livelihoods yet they are disappearing three times faster than forests. More than 35% of wetlands have been degraded or lost since 1970. Reversing this trend is critical.

This year’s theme: “Wetland Restoration” highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration, and calls on an entire generation to take steps to revive and restore degraded wetlands to reverse the trend and contribute to the efforts of restoring ecosystems around the world.

These were highlighted by Director of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Charles Nyabayo, when he represented the County Executive Committee Member for Environment Dr. Abraham Serem said during a meeting with other key partners on the preparation of the World’s Wetlands Celebration Day to be held on 2nd February 2023.

According to David Ruto, Manager Water Resources Management Authority, the exercise will entail the clean-up of River Sosiani on 1st February and later a Symposium that will take place at the University of Eldoret on 2nd February 2023. He further called on schools to consider planting fruit trees in their institutions.

The Manager of Eldoret Municipality Mr. Tito Koiyet pledged his support towards the event adding that the Municipality of Eldoret is working on developing River Sosiani as a big landmark for the county.

Prof. Lizzy Mwamburi From the University of Eldoret suggested the need for a symposium on Wetlands to sensitize people on the need for wetland conservation.
