The Principal Secretary of the State Department for Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, emphasized the vital role of women’s economic empowerment and resource control during the closing remarks of the Regional High-Level Conference marking the 24th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Beacco noted that the Kenyan government is actively promoting gender equality by ensuring that women are represented in leadership positions. “We are committed to issues of gender equality and bringing more women to the decision-making table,” she stated, underscoring the broader benefits of empowering women for community development.

The two-day conference, themed “Fostering Peace and Inclusivity in Eastern and Southern Africa: Effective Strategies for Advancing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda,” brought together participants from 13 countries. Dr. Beacco pointed out the diverse contributions of women in development and stressed the importance of leveraging their influence to enact change.

Despite ongoing challenges faced by women in conflict zones and marginalized areas, she highlighted that forums like this one are crucial for reshaping narratives and strategies. “The ideas we’ve developed here, from grassroots activism to regional policies, provide tangible ways to advance the Women, Peace, and Security agenda,” she said.

Key topics discussed at the conference included enhancing women’s leadership in peace and security, prioritizing their participation in decision-making platforms, and promoting the intersectionality of gender with peace and security issues.

Dr. Beacco concluded by calling for continued efforts to strengthen women’s roles in peace processes, ensure their protection during conflicts, and amplify their leadership in post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
