Youth Advocacy Group Calls for Halt to Protests to Facilitate Government Reforms
The Uasin Gishu Center for Human Rights and Democracy (CHRD) has called for a pause in youth-led protests, urging young Kenyans to allow President William Ruto the opportunity to form a new cabinet.
The organization believes this step is crucial for addressing the nation’s persistent issues of unemployment, corruption, and economic challenges.
In a statement released today, Kipkorir Ngetich, Programs Officer at CHRD, acknowledged the significant role that youth protests have played in spotlighting these issues. However, he emphasized the need for a stable environment to facilitate meaningful reform.
“The youth have made a strong statement about the urgent need for change,” Ngetich said. “Now, it’s essential for them to give the President space to establish a government capable of tackling these issues effectively. A functioning cabinet is vital for implementing solutions and mobilizing resources.”
CHRD outlined several recommendations to support the reform process:
Public Barazas
Immediate organization of grassroots forums to engage citizens and develop solutions tailored to local economic and social needs.
Strengthened Anti-Corruption Measures
Establishment of an independent body to oversee the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to ensure accountability and prevent any compromises. Expedited legislative changes are also necessary to enhance the fight against corruption.
County Government Reforms:
Address corruption, nepotism, and inefficiency within county governments. Those implicated in the misappropriation of public resources should be held accountable, and efforts should focus on hiring competent officials.
Support for the National Government:*
CHRD calls on all Kenyans to support the President and his administration in their reform efforts, ensuring that government officials are dedicated and results-oriented.
Ngetich stressed the importance of constructive engagement and collaboration to address the nation’s challenges. “The protests have highlighted critical issues. For real progress, we need to support the President’s efforts to form an effective cabinet and implement reforms that will benefit the entire country.”
