Youth across Kenya took to the streets today in a unified protest against the Finance Bill 2024, voicing strong opposition to its provisions which they argue exacerbate the high cost of living.

The protests, marked by peaceful demonstrations in various cities including Eldoret, underscored a growing discontent among Kenyan citizens, particularly from the younger generation, over economic policies they believe do not prioritize their welfare.

President William Ruto addressed the nation from Statehouse Nairobi on Wednesday, acknowledging the protests as a democratic right but emphasizing that they should not disrupt the legislative process.

Despite this, demonstrators persisted in their efforts to influence decision-makers, demanding amendments to the bill that address their concerns.

In Eldoret, a significant contingent of protesters, including women carrying packets of sanitary pads, highlighted specific grievances regarding the proposed taxation on sanitary products.

“Sasa hatutanyesha,” exclaimed some of the demonstrators, underscoring their determination not to relent until their demands are met. Their protest outside the Uasin Gishu county government’s office continued despite warnings from authorities.

“The President must listen to the cries of Kenyan citizens or step down,” asserted protesters, reflecting a broader sentiment of dissatisfaction with President Ruto’s administration. Calls for legislators to align with public sentiment in the ongoing national debate over the Finance Bill 2024 echoed throughout the protests, urging MPs to reject what they described as draconian economic measures.

The demonstrations remained peaceful for the most part, although tensions flared in some instances with reports of teargas being deployed by police to disperse crowds. Nonetheless, the resolve of the protesters remained steadfast as they sought to make their voices heard in the corridors of power.

As the nation prepares for further deliberations on the Finance Bill 2024, the protests serve as a poignant reminder of the societal divisions and economic anxieties gripping Kenya, with a generation determined to shape its own future.

Stay tuned for further developments as the national debate on the Finance Bill 2024 continues.
