Kenyans Urged to Find Alternative Ways of Solving Cases-ODPP Official
Kenyans have been urged to find alternative ways of solving cases.
According to the Head of Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Riftvallwy region Alloys Kemo this will help in reducing backlog of cases and congestion in prison.
“I want to call upon Kenyans across then Country to find alternative ways of solving cases which include Plea bargaining
where a negotiated agreement between a criminal accused and a prosecutor, where the accused agrees to voluntarily plead guilty or no contest the concession from a prosecutor in exchange of a plea,” said Alloy.
He reiterated that Kenyans can also solve cases through diversion which is an alternative to criminal prosecution as a means of resolving criminal cases by removing the matter from the court system in deserving cases.
Kemo spoke in Eldoret during sensitization exercise for the prosecutor, probation officers, children officers from Northrift, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet on diversion and pre-bargaining.
He further decried the increased number of inmates in remand prisons.
“As I am talking there is much congestion in our prisons in which if thye could have embraced alternative ways there might not be congestion witnessed. The amount used to take care of one person in remand prison is Sh270-300 per day which is very high,” he added.
