In a strong response to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's recent remarks, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, has accused the Mt. Kenya leader of misleading the region into political oblivion. Speaking in Uasin Gishu County, Kabogo emphasized that contrary to Gachagua's claims, the region remains loyal to President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“The noise that you are hearing in Mt. Kenya directed at the President will soon come to an end. The region has no problem with the government,” Kabogo declared during the Data Privacy Conference 2025 at Eldoret Sports Club.
Kabogo, who previously served as the Governor of Kiambu County, took aim at political figures from Mt. Kenya who have been vocal in their criticism of the current government. He argued that such rhetoric was aimed at isolating the region from the rest of the country, adding that efforts to paint the region as opposed to President Ruto were misguided.
“I will soon make a tour of the region and take the President's greetings, and I am optimistic that it will not be rejected,” Kabogo asserted, reaffirming his commitment to bridging any perceived divide between Mt. Kenya and the central government.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Immaculate Kassait, the Data Commissioner, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, and the area County Commissioner, Eddyson Nyale. During his address, Kabogo also highlighted the government's focus on advancing digital infrastructure across the country, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal data.
In a separate remark, Kabogo condemned the disturbing trend among some youths of circulating doctored images of public figures in coffins, warning that such acts were detrimental to national unity. He urged young people to be responsible in their use of social media and to refrain from engaging in such derogatory activities.
“We will not shut down online platforms over the increased cases of abuse in the digital space. However, I call on our youths to be responsible when using the digital space and stop posting derogatory images of public figures in coffins,” Kabogo added.
The Cabinet Secretary also inaugurated a new regional data protection office in Eldoret, which will serve the North Rift region. This office is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening data protection and supporting digital transformation across the region.
Kabogo's statements reflect the government's broader agenda to ensure that the digital economy continues to thrive, while also addressing concerns about misuse of social media and its impact on public figures and national discourse.
