EARGHSS 2025 Focuses on Advancing Health Sciences and Regional Health Security

The East African Regional Graduate Health Sciences Summit (EARGHSS 2025) convened in Mombasa this week, bringing together health leaders, innovators, and policymakers to discuss the future of health sciences and regional health security. The summit provided a vital platform to explore strategies for strengthening healthcare systems across East Africa and beyond, with a particular focus on local solutions for vaccine production and health equity.

One of the key highlights of the summit was a compelling presentation by Hon. Dr. Swarup Ranjan Mishra, Chair of the Board of Directors at Kenya BioVax Institute Limited. Dr. Mishra shared insights into the Institute’s critical role in advancing local vaccine manufacturing, aiming to address both regional and global health challenges. He emphasized the importance of securing World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification for vaccines, a step crucial to scaling production and meeting the growing demand for life-saving vaccines in Africa. Dr. Mishra stressed the significance of strategic partnerships and innovation in reducing vaccine inequity, underscoring the role of local production in building stronger, more resilient health systems across the continent.

Dr. Deborah Barasa, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, delivered the summit’s keynote address, aligning the event’s discussions with the broader goals of Agenda 2064, the African Union’s socio-economic blueprint. She highlighted the importance of local manufacturing in fostering self-reliance and unlocking the continent’s domestic resources. Dr. Barasa called for the optimization of scarce resources through strategic investments in healthcare and the utilization of digital infrastructure to improve efficiency. She also emphasized universal healthcare as a cornerstone of sustainable development, urging regional governments to prioritize investments in health systems that benefit all citizens.

Kenya BioVax’s efforts were particularly praised during the summit, with the Institute recognized as a key player in achieving health equity and fostering socio-economic transformation across Africa. By aligning with principles of innovation and localization, Kenya BioVax has positioned itself as an integral part of the continent’s strategy to reduce dependency on external vaccine supplies and build sustainable healthcare solutions.

The discussions at EARGHSS 2025 served as a powerful reminder of the need for regional collaboration, innovation, and strategic investments in health sciences to address pressing health challenges and ensure a healthier future for Africa. The summit’s outcomes are expected to further strengthen efforts to enhance health security and improve access to quality healthcare across the region.
