Uasingishu County police Boss orders probe over an officer who assaulted a lady at police cells
Uasin Gishu County police boss, Ayub Ali has ordered a probe over an assault meted out against a middle aged woman who was physically harassed by a police officer in Eldoret.
The middle aged woman identified as Esther Maina was arrested on Friday 20th May 2022 by Deputy Officer Commanding Huruma Police Station in Eldoret town for allegedly creating disturbance at Huruma Estate in a manner likely to have caused a breach of peace.
However,Maina is demanding justice after being assaulted by the unidentified police officer while at the Huruma Police Station cells.
“I was taken to Huruma Police Station while drunk and unconscious and locked in one of the cells before being harassed by a police officer “Said Maina.
The woman claimed to have been beaten and tortured by the police officer in the cells.”I was stroked with a cane, beaten up and the police officer who later poured urine on me then left me naked overnight.”She cried.
A Human Right Defender under the organization of Child Care Legal Aid Clinic, Joseph Sawe condemned the mistreatment of Esther Maina by the unidentified Police officer.
“The concerns of the victims should be heard considerably and I urge an investigation led by Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) be undertaken expeditiously and the suspected police officer be aligned in court.”Sawe said.
The government has since ordered for a probe following the matter,”I promise to carry out an investigation over the unfortunate incident and ensure Esther Maina gets justice.”Said Ayub Ali,Uasin Gishu County police commandant.
“The core mission of a police officer is to control crime rather than stimulating assaults on the public detained at the police cells” Noted Ali
Ayub Ali warned against police officers misusing power at the police stations as it is illegal according to the Constitution of Kenya.
“It is embarrassing for a police officer who is intended to protect people and the society at large to make physical attack on the suspects while at the police cells, this will not be condoned ,”cautioned Ali
