County Heightens Efforts to Increase Students Enrollment in VTCs
The county government of Trans Nzoia has heightened efforts to boost student enrollment in vocational training centers (VTCs) which have been fully equipped.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting at the Chorlim Vocational Center in Endebess, the County’s director of education Eliud Lusweti said it is worrying that there are form four leavers who are grounded in villages who have failed to take advantage of the closeness of the institutions.
Mr Lusweti said there is need to deal with the misleading notion that the VTCs are meant for students who failed in their national examination and school drops out by encouraging all the youth to join the centers to gain technical knowledge.
He said the most paying jobs in the country currently are for those with technical skills including construction works being undertaken by both government and the private sector.
The Director challenged the youth in the neighbourhood to join the center saying a good number of the first lot that joined the institution at the onset of devolution are now reaping fruits through the skills they acquired.
On her side the Endebess Sub County ward administrator Dr Scholastica Nalobile expressed her commitment in working with the local leaders including the Ward administrators, chief and assistant chief in ensuring that they mop up all youths in their localities join the centers.
Dr. Nalobile stressed a rise in technical based jobs in comparison with the white collar ones and challenged the youth in the region to take up the training for various courses offered.
The area chief Violet Ndiema asked the youth to join the vocational Training Center saying this will reduce the idleness among the youth in the area since they will have something to be engaged in upon completion of life.
Ndiema said the main aim of the government bringing both Technical Training colleges and vocational Training centers closer to the people is to empower the youth through skills training hence reducing youth engagement into criminal activities, alcoholism and abuse.
The area chief said she is going to work with the village elders in the area to identify parents whose children are at home to ensure that they join the VTCs
