MTRH MARKS THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD KIDNEY DAY
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS today, 10th March 2022, led staff in commemoration of the International World Kidney Day.
Dr. Aruasa flagged off the team at Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Disease Centre (CCCDC) who sensitized the public in Eldoret town along Uganda Road, Kenyatta Street and Nandi Road.
Over 300 people turned up for screening at the Hospital Memorial grounds.
“The International World Kidney Day is an annual event where we reiterate our messaging on public health education, particularly on adherence to good nutrition, exercise/work, clean water & sanitation- critical steps towards averting lifestyle diseases at the lowest level of the community”. He said.
Diabetes and Hypertension remain the leading causes of Kidney Diseases, the world over.
“Kidney transplant remains the better( including with better quality of life) way of managing kidney failure. For instance, one would require Ksh. 30,000 per month for post transplant care whilst hemodiafiltration (hemodialysis) would cost upto Ksh. 100,000 per month,” said the CEO.
To date, MTRH has transplanted over 150 pairs(donors and recipients) with good success rates and 200 patients per week undergoing hemodiafiltration.
The MTRH CEO added that screening is the most important way to detect kidney problems early.
He also pointed out that the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) should consider scaling up reimbursement for patients seeking dialysis services.
“We have engaged NHIF and presented our counter offer which should, at a minimum, continue with the Ksh. 9,000 per session for the number of sessions each patient would require in a week.
MTRH collaborates with Kenya Renal Association, Patient Support Groups and NHIF.
