WOMAN TO BATTLE MEN IN BUSIA SENATORIAL CONTEST 2022
Decorated former Administration Police Officer, Doris Sabina Wako has created history by becoming the first woman to contest the Busia Senatorial seat since the onset of devolution in 2013.
Former Attorney General, Amos Wako won the seat for the first in 2013 before retaining it in 2017. With the deadline for presentation of nomination papers to Orange House elapsing at midnight on Wednesday, March, 16th, 2022, uncertainity looms whether the former AG submitted his nomination papers either to defend his seat or the Governorship as earlier alluded.
Addressing the press in Busia, Wako said she wants the senatorial seat to continue supporting the welfare of streed families who are endured with many challenges.
” I am a leader and want Busia County residents to realize that their sense of belonging and the right to their resources and how it’s utilized for effective service delivery.
She added: ” I will also ensure that street children get a rehabilitation centre which will guarantee their safety and ensure they go to school or join one of the 26 vocational centres in the country where they will pursue skilled courses for their sustainability.”
Wako who resigned from Kenya Police Service in May, 2021 resorted to selling smoked fish for survival as she continued to take care of dozens of street kids in the border town of Busia.
She will battle it out for the coveted seat with activist, Okiya Omtatah who will contest the seat on National Reconstruction Party (NRA) which he is the party leader.
Omtatah contested for the first time in 2017 where he gave his best shot, coming second against winner, Amos Wako in what became a close contest that saw the newcomer nearly upset the formbook.
Others who have entered the race include Mathematics Lecturer in China, Moses Emoru from Machakusi in Teso South, and youthful contentstants Wakili Deogratious Obella from Malaba and Carlos Oyoma.
Orange Democratic Movement Busia County Executive Secretary, Innocent Oluku thanked Doris for her bold move and becoming the first woman to enter the Senatorial race, urging other women to seek various elective positions.
