The meeting that was held at The Eldoret Sports Club attracted hundreds of people was aimed at giving a voice to the business community on matters affecting them and how they can change the tough economic situation within the region.
Hon Rigathi Gachagua, Mathira mp and Kenya kwanza’s deputy presidential candidate who was the chief guest campaigned for the bottom up model while urging the residents to air out what they want done for them in the next government.
“We are here in the deputy president’s backyard to listen to and collect the views of the people of Uasin Gishu County so that we compile a list of things that you the people suggest. William ruto and I are asking for five years to do the things you suggest and that after five years you can evaluate our performance.”
The meeting attracted various stakeholders from the county who got to air their views and what they want implemented when the deputy president led team takes charge.
“We request the government to ensure all agricultural products are exempted from tax so as to cushion farmers from rising production and operational costs. As farmers we would like the government to pay 3500 shs for a bag of maize and subsidize fertilizer prices to 1800 shs as this would boost production and curb the food shortage in the country.” Noted farmers’ representative Ben Soy.
The residents also requested for a reprieve on taxes as it has led to rising costs of living with basic commodities being unaffordable for the common mwananchi.
“We the elderly sell things on pavements and we are supposed to pay taxes. What we get is barely enough to sustain us and prices are rising on the shelves because of the fuel prices. As a nation where are you taking us?” Retorted Agnetta Mwangi a business lady.
