IEBC CLEARS OJAAMONG TO CONTEST TESO SOUTH PARLIAMENTARY SEAT
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared Busia Governor, H.E Sospeter Ojaamong to contest the Teso South Parliamentary seat on an ODM ticket during the August 9th, 2022 polls.
H.E Ojaamong was the second to submit his nominatiobn papers to Amukura IEBC Returning Officer, Carol Okki. The first to be cleared was former Project Officer, University of Nairobi Enterprises (UNES), Millicent Joan Iprong Ekasiba.
Teso South MP Geoffrey Omuse who will defend his seat on an independent ticket and former Area MP, Mary Emaase (UDA) will submit their nomination papers tomorrow.
The Governor said the journey for economic liberation has started after political liberation that gave birth to political parties.
” Our number one agenda is economic liberation of our people. We need to put our heads together by speaheading construction of industries to create jobs for unemployed youth,” the Governor told journalists moments after being cleared.
He added: ” The objective is not seeking for seats but economic liberation of the people. There are many agendas to be handled at the National Assembly including taxes and funds. It’s painful for the Government to borrow money every month; we need to use our vast experience to help the country overcome the current economic turn down.”
H.E Ojaamong called for peaceful campaigns devoid of which-hunt and character assassination, adding that let whoever is popular to electorate carry the day but on condition that they have good agenda for the people.
The Governor described IEBC process as efficient with the only challenge being in the system which was slow, thus making it difficult to download some documents.
The governor was first elected in 2002 as Member of Parliament for Amagoro Constituency, which was later split into Teso North and South constituencies after successfully dethroning the then legislator Albert Ekirapa.
He was re-elected in 2007 before going for Busia gubernatorial seat in 2012 and successfully defending the seat in the 2017 general elections
In 2010, the Teso district was eliminated and replaced by Busia County, and the electoral constituency was divided into Teso North and Teso South Constituencies.
Amagoro Constituency was an electoral constituency in Kenya’s former Western Province. It was the only constituency in the now-defunct Teso District.
With barely two months left to the next General Election, a number of the county bosses will be ineligible to vie again having served two consecutive terms in line with the constitution.
