Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has withdrawn her re-election bid in favor of her opponent Julius Malombe, who is of Wiper Democratic Party.

Ngilu, who is the Narc Party leader dropped her bid on Wednesday, as Azimio La Umoja coalition campaigned in Kitui ahead of the August elections.

According to the Azimio La Umoja flag-bearer Raila Odinga, Ngilu will have other roles in the government they form if they bag a win in the August polls.

The Kitui race has attracted among others, Malombe, Former Kitui Senator David Musila and former Nairobi deputy governor Jonathan Mueke who is seeking the Kitui governorship on a United Democratic Alliance ticket.

The former Governor had to contend with petitions and court cases in which Kiema Kilonzo, who was vying for the Wiper ticket, challenged the party’s decision to award him a direct ticket.

The final case was decided on Friday by Justice Christine Meoli, who declared Malombe’s nomination null and void and ordered repeat nominations within 72 hours.

As a result, the nomination was held on Sunday, and Malombe won with 9,826 votes to Kilonzo’s 80.

Malombe was presented with his clearance certificate on Monday at the Kitui Multipurpose Development and Training Institute by Kitui County IEBC returning officer Macharia Gichichi.
