EACC Recovers Grabbed Land Worth Sh 1.15 billion in Eldoret
The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission(EACC) has recovered property worth Sh 1.15 billion which had been grabbed by private individuals.
According to EACC Deputy Director in charge of the North-rift region, numerous public lands are in Eldoret town.
“We have so far recovered grabbed land worth Sh 1.15. The title deeds that the private individuals were holding and the title has been canceled and forwarded to the treasury who are the custodians of such property,” EACC Deputy Director in charge of the North-rift region says.
He spoke during an event that was organized by Transparency International which brought together stakeholders to mark African Anti-Corruption day.
The land that has been recovered includes Uasin Gishu District Hospital, Eldoret police station, and Uasin Gishu County Assembly among others.
He says the land will be soon handed to the commissioner at the statehouse and will be reverted to the owners.
“There was a hospital and police station just here in Uasin Gishu County
which has been grabbed by individuals we have so far taken and title deed. Write now the hospital is safe police are safe and as we speak there is a plot that is being built the County Assembly which is part of our recovery. We have also frozen bank accounts where we do not want the transaction to continue since they are proceeds of crime from where we sit,” he added.
Concerning the maize scandal, he said the culprits have been taken to court and that 80 witnesses are lined up for the same.
Alex Yator from Transparency International Kenya who is the senior regional officer representing Northrift region said the event was meant to mark Africa’s Anti-corruption day where they invited stakeholders of the government, private sector, law society, and people from the media in promoting the fight against corruption.
“What is coming out clearly from the session is that that we had a panel discussion with the police judiciary, ODPP IPOA and what is coming our clearly is members of the public have many questions when it comes to corruption within the police service they still feel that the department f traffic police still a key leading sector in terms of promoting corruption in their region,” said Yator.
“A lot of discussions are happening on what can be done to stop the menace of corruption in the department,” he added.
