ELGEYO MARAKWET COUNTY PARTNERS WITH KENYA ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCE CENTRE (KAGRC)
As a follow up to HE Gov Tolgos visit to the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre (KAGRC) towards sustaining the Flagship Artificial Insemination Program within the County, the Managing Director KAGRC paid a visit to the County Offices today where he delivered the 20 AI containers to the department of Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperatives.
The MD appreciated Elgeyo Marakwet for the investment in the Livestock Breeding Program that has seen over 23,000 cows getting Inseminated.
The County recently entered into an MOU with KAGRC in order to sustain the supply of high performing – environmentally matching genetics producing upto 50 litres of milk per day. Founded in the year 1946, KAGRC has rich animal genetic potential with Pure bred bulls.
Further the MD conveyed the plans to train 8 AI Officers in Goat AI & Embryo Transfer in order to facilitate access to excellent genetics. The training in Embryo transfer will each cost kshs 500,000.
On his part, County Secretary Mr Chemutut who received the guests appreciated the assistance and implored more partnerships in the Livestock sector in order to push the County Average Milk Production from the current 6.7litres to 10 litres.
He Further thanked the MD for the donation of Magic 50 (Girolando) and Sahiwal Semen to the County to serve the Sahiwal farmers along the Kerio Valley now specialising on Sahiwal Breeding.
Present during the meeting was the Livestock CECM Dr Kiyeng, Chief Oficer Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperatives De Benson Kibore, Ag Director Livestock Production Rachael Kolomy, Sub County Veterinary Officers and Staff from the Livestock Department
