2200 trees planted in beating up exercise at Kapseret Forest station

Kenya Forest Services in conjunction with various stakeholders from Uasin Gishu County organized a
beating up exercise. Beating up is an exercise that involves the replacement of newly planted trees
which have died. The exercise held at Kapseret Forest Station, Kapseret Constituency saw 2200 trees
being planted on Saturday.

With the national forest cover threshold being constitutionally set at 10%, Uasin Gishu County appears
on the safe side with the county matching the set 10% forest cover, more needs to be done as climate
change effects are being witnessed worldwide.

“We are here with various stakeholders and the community to assist Kenya Forest Services in this
exercise. Their involvenment leads to them owning the forest resulting in reduction of forest
destruction.” Said Joseph Ondieki, adding the community also benefits socially, economically and even
politically.

With climate change effects already being felt all over the globe and variations in rain patterns in the
region, a rallying call has been issued to people to protect the forest cover as deforestation lists second
among the major causes of climate change.

“Mine is to urge them to desist from destroying the forest, but encourage them to do more forestation
and aforestation. Through the exercise of aforestation we’ll improve the tree cover and achieve the
government regulation of 10% while also help reduce the effects of climate change affecting the world
of today.” Noted Joseph Ondieki, Kapseret station manager.

The event attracted individuals from Unga ltd, Kenya Red Cross, Vera beauty college,Bayusuf and Sons
ltd, Coca Cola company and Uasin Gishu Journalists Association.
