Uproar as persons with disabilities In Eldoret Demonstrate After They Were shortchanged in MCA Nomination list

Persons with disabilities (PWDS) in Uasin Gishu County took to the streets of Eldoret crying foul as their names were omitted in the final gazette list for representation in the county assembly.

This they claim is the doing of people with other selfish interests rather than the welfare of people living with disabilities residing in the county.
“I applied for the nominations in May and I was shortlisted in the first, second, and third lists but come to the final gazette list, my name was omitted. Why was I omitted yet I was to represent persons with disability in the county assembly?” Said Robert Kiptanui Kering.

Facing various struggles in life due to their physical conditions, the persons wanted justice to be delivered as they feel neglected in slots and positions yet the constitution is clear on the representation of persons in the various public offices and positions. People with disabilities are supposed to get two nomination slots at the county assembly as per the constitution.

“We are standing here to fight for our rights and seek justice. The list gazetted recently is unconstitutional and ill-intended. The reason is, the constitution is clear on representation in the county assembly. One male and one female. We have been denied our slots and we have no voice in the Uasin Gishu County assembly. We need justice. Some of us cannot see, hear or walk properly and you want to sideline us.

Who will represent us?” Remarked Regina Chumba. This comes after persons with disabilities from Isiolo, Kericho, and Trans Nzoia counties raised similar concerns on what seems to be a trend in replacing the shortlisted persons with friends, family, and relatives of those in office.

“We as persons with disabilities being denied our constitutional rights is something unthinkable. These seats are not to be scrambled but the law is clear for one woman and one man to be in the nomination slots. If not let it be scrapped off the constitution and you will not hear any of us raising issues about our representation. We call on the government in place to look into this matter as they promised to run a bottom-up economic model.” Retorted Meshack Kamau.
