Uasin Gishu County Eminent Persons Panel has applauded residents for maintaining peace before, during, and after the August poll.

Speaking during the Post-Electoral Actor’s Engagements and Reflections at EKA Hotel, Yassin Hassan, coordinator Uasin Gishu County Eminent said this showed political maturity.

“First of all we want to thank Uasin Gishu residents for maintaining peace despite being branded as a hotspot, this has shown political maturity and that Kenyans can vote peacefully for the leaders of their choice without fighting each other. We are proud that the work we did of preaching peace borne fruits,” he said.

Before the August polls, the panel met the county security team, politicians from the region, bloggers, bodaboda and Matatu, and IEBC who played a major role in ensuring that there is a peaceful election.

Uasin Gishu County Eminent person Panel Coordinator said they want to remove the notion that there is war during elections.

The issues that were discussed include threats to peace and security in the County that is land and settlement, land ownership, tribal grouping, cattle rustling, and constituency demarcation among others.

“Political emerging issues that were discussed include uneven distribution of resources, lack of representation of different groups such as youths, PLWD’S, women among others,” he said.

Uasin Gishu County Eminent Persons Panel recommended that there should be dialogue and sensitization on land policy through radio, deconstructing the narrative of land ownership, sensitization of land policies, enforcement of land policies, implementation of reports such TJRC and Bethuel Kiplagat, and that there should be a clear guideline on land issues.

“We will engage with county government, land officials, youth women so that we solve the issue once and for all to prevent it from reoccurring every time the Country is heading to elections. We will ensure that the recommendation is implemented to the latter,” he said.

The Uasin Gishu County Eminent Persons Panel consists of youth leaders, church leaders, representatives of the business community, Elders from the different tribes, and a representative from higher education who came together to ensure the County have a peaceful election.

“Bloggers carry the face of the country therefore I call upon them to use every means they have to preach peace before and after the elections,” she said.
