Kamariny Primary school teacher Shokwei V Barsulai has been feted for her distinguished Community service.

She says this is a major highlight in her career life and as a community worker.

“I take this opportunity to thank God for the gift of life and protection. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. I endeavor to keep protecting the rights of children.
I dedicate this award to my grade three Learners, Kamariny primary school who give me a reason to wake up daily. Their innocence amuses me and their hope inspires me,” she said.

The school is in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Barsulai was employed by TSC 2015 and she is a founder of an Sikika Community Organization.

Sikika Community-Based Organization (SCBO), was established in 2020 and registered in 2021 and operates within the Elgeyo Marakwet County of Kenya. The organization came up out of concern about the then-increasing cases of child abuse in the county.

“Sikika brings together professionals from within and without the county to tackle the many cases of child abuse, reduce the rates of children dropping out of school, especially during the transition from primary school to secondary school and offer access to Sexual and Reproductive Health education to the adolescents,” she says.

She says over time nutrition and environmental conservation, have also become a concern for us.
We run several programs to push our agenda.

“So far we depend on friends and member contributions to run our programs but hope to get support from donors and the government in the future. We are in the process of constructing a community resource center and a safe haven for the children,” she says.


Their objectives include the fight against child abuse especially defilement, and any other kind of physical or emotional harm, offer guidance and counseling to minors who’ve gone through abuse or any other kind of trauma.

Provide a safe space for the minors who’ve been abused to stay during the intervening period.
Raising awareness of children’s rights among the community members and providing an avenue
for advocacy, advocate for equal education rights for all children; boys and girls insisting on those living with HIV/AIDS and disabilities.

Promote 100% transition of children from primary school to secondary school, Increase the level of literacy among both children and adults by providing guidance and learning materials. Also, encourage parents to let their children attend school consistently, advocate for sexual reproductive health education and hygiene among adolescents, and promote proper nutrition in the community among others.
