The second edition of the East African Mimi classic safari rally kicked off in earnest this morning in Eldoret.

Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii accompanied Sports Cabinet Secretary Hon. Ababu Namwamba in the flagging exercise at the Rupa’s mall.

Bii said the racing gives an opportunity to our County and to the budding rally participants who are keen to contribute immensely to our economic growth.

“We are privileged as a County to host the event and interact with rally champions drawn from the local and international spheres who will cross the larger Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Baringo Counties,” he said

CS sports says “I want to assure the organizers of government support in growing motorsport and nurturing budding rally drivers, including women. Sports must be a mega industry creating employment and contributing to GDP significantly,” he said.

The Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii thereafter made an impromptu visit to Kipchoge stadium to check on its construction status.

Speaking after the tour, the CS expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of the exercise while putting the contractor on notice for what he termed as a failure to act with speed in meeting the set timelines.

“I call for an urgent audit of all stadiums in the country in order to ascertain how much was spent in the construction process. It’s sad that contractors ate doing shoddy jobs and not meeting the dateline,” said Namwamba.

Governor Bii on his part said that the delay has denied sportsmen and women a chance to compete at the stadium while noting that tax payers money has been spent and the project is still incomplete.
