Marakwet West Member of Parliament Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich has lauded Brigid Kosgei Foundation and Stanbic Bank for their mentorship towards schools and school-going kids within the Marakwet West constituency.

The scholarship which targets school dropouts as a result of early pregnancies and other causes in the affected areas aims at ensuring the kids are back in school up until completion and was held at Kipkundul Mixed Day and Secondary School.

“As the Member of Parliament for Marakwet West, I want to thank Brigid Kosgei and the Stanbic bank for they have collaborated in giving their support to Kipkundul Mixed day and secondary school. I thank them a lot for their support because here and in the majority of Marakwet West, school-going children have dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. That is why I am grateful to Stanbic Bank for ensuring these kids are back in school.” Said Timothy Toroitich.

Highlighting some of the issues affecting Marakwet West from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early marriages, and pregnancies, the legislature issued a rallying call to all relevant stakeholders to form a mentorship program to cater to the needs of these kids who still have rights as compared to their mates in school.

“In our Marakwet West constituency, there are some issues still affecting us the residents. Issues like FGM, early teen pregnancies, etc. I want to support what happened here today and my office together with Brigid Foundation and Stanbic bank will start a mentorship program so that we can enlighten parents that there is education after pregnancy and our affected kids can still learn like others still in school.” Added the Member of Parliament.

On matters of education, with the constituency having a low teacher-student ratio, the member of parliament has called on the Teachers Service Commission to consider hiring more teachers since many teachers asked for transfers out of the conflict-laden areas due to cases of rising insecurities and banditry witnessed over the past.

“As were are talking, there is an advertisement for the recruitment of new teachers. The major problem in the Marakwet West constituency is the low teacher-student ratio due to the conflicts in some parts of the constituency like the Kerio valley. So there are no teachers working in the conflict zones and those who were there asked for transfers out of the county therefore we call on the Teachers Service Commission to give us special consideration and give us more teachers in Marakwet West and East.” he noted.
