Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) North rift region has threatened to issue a Doctors Strike Notice following delayed payments of salaries to their members in Nandi County.

Led by KMPDU Chairperson of the North Rift Region, Dr. Darwin Ambuka, the Union claimed most of their members were being discriminated against despite them being on job 24/7.

“We demand right labor practice for the development of all the workers and the county government of Nandi should uphold the integrity and pay their workers since most of our doctors have been subjected to unfair treatment with some being paid promptly while the rest continue to serve without pay or with delayed payments ,” said Ambuka

Ambuka noted that doctors should be employed on permanent and pensionable terms(PMP) rather than through contracts which diminishes career development for the workers after the end of the signed contracts.

“Doctors are always stranded in the jobs to venture in after their outdated contracts and this has killed their professions,” said Ambuka

He urged the county government of Turkana to ensure PMP for all the health workers as the county is looking forward to the recruitment of health officers.

The county government of Turkana has announced vacancies for health practitioners under contract and invited qualified and competent workers to apply.

The Doctors Union has however applauded the Turkana county government for including members of KMPDU in the Budget and Economic Forum a committee that will decide on budgetary allocation in the health department.

“We appreciate the gesture from the Turkana County government to include KMPDU members in this powerful committee and we urge other counties to emulate this example, so far Turkana County is the only county within the North Rift Region to include the union in its health budgetary making process,” said Dr. Ambuka.
