Trade, Industry and Cooperative Committee Engages KEBS Over Dissapeared Sugar
The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives chaired by Hon. James Gakuya met officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) led by the Acting Managing on the Condemned Sugar.
Appearing before the Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Mrs.Esther Ngari the Ag. Director General distanced the Standardisation Body from the involvement of the disappeared sugar.
Ms. Esther Ngari informed the Committee that the said sugar was in custody of KRA with the Authority’s seals and that KEBS were awaiting for the official release of the sugar to them.
The Committee asked Mrs. Esther Ngari to furnish the Committee with more information in regards to; the appointment of the mitli agency team, the period of time KEBS needs to conclude the search of the disappeared sugar and whether KEBS tested the sugar while at their Mombasa warehouse.
The Committee asked whether there is other consignments held by KRA that are also condemned and the mechanisms that KEBS has put in place to avert recurrence of such malpractices in the future among other concerns.
In her response, Ms. Ngari informed the Committee that the Standardization Body intends to form a permanent Committee for destruction of suspected goods and review the Standards Act to give clear powers to KEBS to destroy rejected consignments.
To enable KEBS respond adequately to the Committee’s concerns, Ms. Ngari requested the Committee to give her two weeks to prepare her responses.
