First Track Mentors Donate Sanitary Towels to over 9,000 Girls
First track mentors organization has donated sanitary towels to 9000 girls this year.
According to Valentine Kemei the founder of the organization, their goal is to mentor students and empower women in the country.
“We support education through the donation of sanitary towels to girls in primary schools and high schools, also we support widows, people living with HIV/AIDS, and the needy in the society,”said Kemei.
She noted that their organization has reached over 100 schools in 16 counties and they aim to reach more counties this year and support more girls.
“The fear of being laughed at when they are on their period at school because they can’t afford to buy sanitary towels has led to many girls dropping out of school and as an organization, we are trying to fight against this problem,” said Kemei.
“Girls from poor families face a lot of problems mostly being bodaboda riders who try to lure them by promising to buy them sanitary towels and using them for sex and in the end a lot of them drop out of school because of teenage pregnancies she added.
Kemei has urged organizations and hospitals to come together and help in the donation of sanitary pads to students in the society.
“We aim to donate sanitary towels to all candidates by the end of the year as this will help in preventing students from missing their national exams when they are on their period.”
The situation is worse in poor communities where girls use unhygienic alternatives that leave them at risk of contracting bacterial diseases.
“Sometimes girls use their sweaters, socks, mattress, and shirts during their period and this is unhygienic.”
Kemei called upon the government of Kenya to support schools with funds to provide menstrual products to school girls as this will help boost their self-esteem and performance in class.
