Uasin Gishu County Declares War on Illegal Liquor

Uasin Gishu County is putting a lot of effort to curb drug abuse and illicit brew in the county.

According to Eunice Sarubia National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) North Rift Manager, they are working closely with the stakeholders in the County and National government to weed out illegal alcohol and drug abuse.

“Uasin Gishu County is among Counties doing well in terms of drug and substance in the country in terms of combating alcohol and drug control,” said Sarubia.

The Uasin Gishu County commander, Benjamin Mwanzi said that they aim to eradicate the illicit brew and drug abuse but not reduce it.
” If we reduce then it means there will be some remaining in cups. If we do not eradicate illicit brew then who will do so?” Mwanzi stated.

The County police boss urged residents to have a hand in giving out relevant information to the relevant authorities so as to reduce the menace.

” We want to encourage members of the public to come up with information. Let them tell us what is happening and where,” Mwanzi said.

The crackdown will mainly target those above the age of eighteen years but the security agencies will not hesitate to arrest those under age and subject them to the full force of the law.

“All perpetrators will be arrested but the process and we will make sure the due legal process and provisions will be followed,” added Mwanzi.

He noted that to curb the smuggling of illicit brew and drugs and substances from other counties, the Uasin Gishu security committee will involve those from neighboring counties.

“We are going to have intra-county and sub-county meetings with our counterparts from Kakamega, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kericho to ensure that all goods coming from their sides to Uasin Gishu are intercepted,” Mwanzi noted.

This comes weeks after the Alcohol Drinks Control Board impounded more than 10,000 litres of ‘kangara’ and 1,500 litres of ‘chang’aa.

The crackdown also saw about 39 people charged in court and a stun warning issued to all involved in the illicit brew.
