Is there a difference between discipline and punishment?
Samchi Group Founder and Chief Executive Officer Madam Esther Muchemi has taken a moment to share with us more about where we draw the line between discipline and punishment.
She says
Discipline or Punishment
I thought I knew English, until those two words crossed my mind.
And really I wondered do I truly know the difference!?
In a layman’s understanding I discovered-:
Their difference lies in the motive, in the reason behind.
The tool used to discipline or punish maybe the same or perceived to be the same, but the end game is different.
The motive behind disciplinary action is to correct, to help you make better decisions, take a better position, in other words become a better person, a better leader etc., in the future compared to your now, your yesterday.
Punishment on the other hand is about punishing you for a wrong you have done. To make you pay a price in a way.
So a loving father disciplines his child by beating, for example, for eating sugar, but a person who doesn’t love your child punishes the child to pay for eating sugar, so to speak
This is so with God, our father, He disciplines a people He loves so that they can become better than they are today or yesterday.
Ever remember, both will cause pain but one brings transformation.
It’s up to you to accept action taken as a disciplinary action and allow yourself to respond positively, or take it as a punishment and remain stubborn in your wrong!
Your response will make the difference.
