Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture Urges Olympic Council to Scale Up Olympic Preparations

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture has urged the Kenya National Olympic Council to significantly improve its preparations for Kenya’s participation in the upcoming Paris Olympics, scheduled to take place in July next year.

Led by the Committee’s Chairperson, Hon. Daniel Wanyama, a former team Kenya Captain, the Committee voiced its concerns during a meeting with representatives from the Kenya National Olympic Council and the Kenya National Sports Council. The primary agenda was to assess the preparedness of Team Kenya as the Olympic event is only a year away.

The Legislators expressed their apprehensions, citing potential challenges that could hinder Kenya’s success in the Olympics. Previous controversies after the 2016 Rio Olympics and recent doping cases that almost led to the country’s suspension by the World Olympic body fueled these concerns.

Among the issues raised during the meeting were logistical challenges, anti-doping measures, and overall athlete welfare. The Members stressed the necessity for a meticulous and transparent approach to planning for the games. They emphasized that the athletes play a crucial role in showcasing the brilliance of the country and should be provided with the necessary support and incentives.

The nominated MP, Hon. Dr Jackson Kosgei, sought to find out the status of the general ecosystem surrounding sports in general.

“What is the ecosystem surrounding our athletes and what steps are you taking to make sure that our flag bearers are not sabotaged and that they have the right environment needed for them to excel in all sports beyond the Olympics?” asked Hon. Kosgei.

In his closing remarks, the Committee chairperson emphasized the need for those in leadership to take better care of sportsmen and women who represent the nation.

“It is high time that we take better care of our champions. The world is watching, and together, we can make the upcoming Olympics a resounding success, uniting us in the celebration of the triumph of those who have shed blood sweat and tears to make this country proud,” said Hon. Wanyama.
