Kenya’s Accession to the UNESCO 1970 Treaty Gets a Nod From the Ministry of Defence
The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture has received significant support for Kenya’s accession to the UNESCO 1970 treaty on the protection of cultural artefacts. Hon. Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, expressed full support when he appeared before the Committee.
“Before writing your report, I want to ask you to visit the Museum to receive first-hand information on the importance of this assession. Our officers will also inform you on all the artefacts that are out there that we are ready to receive,” said Hon Duale.
The Ministry of Defence’s involvement in the preservation of cultural heritage is crucial, given its role in safeguarding the country’s borders. The Ministry is also a key stakeholder in the construction of the Uhuru Garden and Museums, a 68-acre project set to open in December this year.
The museum aims to showcase Kenya’s diverse history and cultural heritage through 32 galleries.
Hon. Duale encouraged Committee members to visit the upcoming museum to grasp the importance of Kenya’s accession to the treaty. He assured that the Ministry is ready to receive all artefacts that are currently outside the country.
Additionally, Suba South MP Hon. Caroli Omondi urged the Ministry to consider joining the 1954 Hague Convention treaty on the Protection of Cultural Artifacts in cases of conflict, as many cultural artefacts were taken during such times.
“I urge your ministry to ensure that there is a framework to seal all loopholes to deal with this issue once and for all. A lot of our cultural artefacts were appropriated during times of conflict; therefore, Kenya must become part of the 1954 Hague Convention treaty.” Urged Hon Caroli.
The Committee’s commitment to preserving Kenya’s cultural heritage for future generations is reinforced by these submissions. Kenya’s accession to the UNESCO 1970 treaty will enable the country to join global efforts in combatting illicit trafficking of cultural artefacts and ensuring their rightful return to their places of origin.
