Regional Center for Mapping Launches Conference to Mitigate Climate Change
The Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development has today launched one of the largest conferences to mitigate climate change that has been for a while a global crisis.
According to Lead land use land cover Phoebe Oduor ,”This is bringing your space to the policymaker so that when they are making decisions that are influencing the common people, they are factoring in the value that observation can be able to be brought to make sure that the decisions that are being made arrived and are being targeted to the right people and the right species,”
“We’re trying to bring solutions from space to support common issues that you and I face, whether this is access to markets, whether this is understanding how your crops are faring on and at the same time, we are looking at the linkages between science and policy”,She said.
The Region support 25 member countries within Africa.
“We have really created a lot of value deprivation in terms of making the right policies in terms of updating and knowing where to best place our resources and use them wisely. And that’s really, this first day is bringing all those policy makers together. Looking at examples of use cases where we have been able to demonstrate how Earth observation can be able to inform policy. And we have brought in member states from all over Africa,”Said Oduor.
She stated they have brought in member states also who are coming from outside the continent to make the contributions on how they’re utilising observation.
“We are focusing on data and users and users here is my NGO, and we try to make sure that whenever data is being created, we’re making sure that everybody has access to this data. We make the data accessible and be utilized to provide information that is relevant to support the decisions that are being made at individual and at government level. Although today we are looking at integration of information,” She said.
Manager Geospatial data tech Michael Ngugi kimani at RCMRD. Said the institution is looking at issues to do with lands, land issues, issues that need solving issues to do with policies and issues about how we administer our lands.
“We are also looking at biodiversity conservation,so we have a lot of challenges when it comes to biodiversity conservation,” He said.
