Cabinet Secretary Agriculture and Livestock Development Hon. Mithika Linturi, Crops Development PS Kello Harsama, and Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke on Thursday conducted a farm visit in Kiplombe Ward to determine the state of maize farming in the area.

During the visit, Linturi announced that the Government has set aside funds to purchase maize, a move that was welcomed by farmers present during the visit saying it will provide farmers with a guaranteed market for their produce.

CS Linturi emphasized the importance of involving the youth in agribusiness as he highlighted that agriculture presents numerous opportunities for young people to create wealth and contribute to the country’s development.

The CS assured the farmers of the Government’s support in terms of providing resources, training, and access to markets.

He also added that the Government has acquired 100 mobile dryers.
These dryers will assist farmers in reducing post-harvest losses by ensuring that their maize is properly dried and stored.

This is a significant development as post-harvest losses have been a major challenge for farmers in the past.

The mobile dryers will enable farmers to preserve the quality of their maize and increase their income.

County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Mr. Edward Sawe praise the move saying this will not only benefit the farmers financially but also motivate them to continue investing in maize farming.

Sawe highlighted the importance of registering farmers in Uasin Gishu County. By registering farmers and understanding the value chain they are undertaking.

The registration process will also provide farmers with valuable information regarding the resources and support available to them.

Sawe urged farmers to join cooperative societies as they play a crucial role in supporting the growth and development of the agricultural sector by providing farmers with training, technical assistance, and market linkage opportunities.

Chief Officers Nixon Cheplong (Livestock) and Elphas Kesio (Agriculture) echoed the sentiments of CECM Sawe, emphasizing the benefits of cooperative societies.

The duo highlighted the importance of collaboration among farmers to maximize productivity, reduce costs, and increase profitability.

By working together, farmers can pool their resources and expertise, leading to improved yields and a stronger position in the market.

Kesio said that registration of farmers will enable the County to gather accurate data about the number of farmers in Uasin Gishu County, their farming practices, and the challenges they face.
According to Kesio, the data will be instrumental in formulating targeted policies and interventions as well as enabling the government to provide tailored support and services, such as extension services, agricultural inputs, and market access, based on the unique requirements of each farmer.
