National Cohesion Commences Sittings in Kisumu to Interrogate Public Institutions Mangers on Imbalances in Staff Diversity

The Parliamentary Committee on National Cohesion has expressed concern over glaring diversity imbalance in employment by government institutions in Western region.

The Committee chaired by Hon. Adan Haji Yussuf started its sittings in Kisumu city to interrogate managements of various public institutions on compliance with the 30 percent rule on procurement reservation to special interest groups.

Members expressed with concern the tribal gaps in employment in the institutions where the region’s dominant community took the lion’s share of job opportunities.

“Reports that have been tabled before us indicate that managements of the public institutions are far away from complying with the law on equality in employment of staff,” said Hon. Yussuf.

Some of the institutions that appeared before the Committee for interrogation were Masinde Muliro University led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shivairo and Maseno University under the leadership of Prof. Julius Nyabundi.

CEOs of Lake Victoria South and North Water Companies also appeared before the Committee for interrogation on the same.

Revelations that 64 percent of staff at Masinde Muliro University were from one community stunned Members who asked the institutions to comply with the law.

The Committee was however impressed that Maseno University was addressing the imbalance in its staff diversity as reports indicated that the number of one community dominating job opportunities had declined from 64 percent to 61 percent.

“The three percent, though minimal, it is an indication of the university moving in the right direction,” said the Chairperson.

The Committee continues with the sittings on Wednesday.
