Kakamega Governor’s Cup Kicks Off

The 2023 edition of Kakamega County Governor’s Cup has officially been launched.

Governor Fernandes Barasa was the Chief Guest at the colourful occasion held at Bushiri Primary School grounds in Navakholo Sub-County, paving way for mouth watering matches that will be staged in all the 60 Wards across the County.

Speaking at the event, Governor Barasa said the objective of the tournament is to tap and nurture grassroot talents and reiterated his Administration’s commitment to facilitate similar sporting events to open external opportunities for talented sportsmen and women across the County.

The Governor used the platform to congratulate the recently crowned East Africa Africa Secondary Schools rugby sevens champions Koyonzo Boys High School following their stellar performance during the East Africa School games held in Rwanda. Koyonzo are now treble winners having clinched both the Regional and National rugby sevens trophies, earlier.

The CECM for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender and Culture Mr Mophat Mandela on his part stated that having attracted 879 teams, men’s football discipline will be played from the Ward level in three Phases starting with the preliminaries. Games in Malava, Navakholo and Mumias East Sub-Counties commenced today while Ikolomani, Lugari and Likuyani Sub-Counties Ward matches will commence on 16th September. Teams in the remaining Sub-Counties will see their matches kick-off on 23rd September. All games will be played during the weekends.

Netball, Volleyball and Football (women) will begin at the Sub-County level while Rugby is set to commence at the County level.

The event was also attended by UDA Secretary General Hon. Cleophas Malala, CECMs, MCAs’ and other Senior Government officers from both levels of Government.
