Governor George Natembeya Directive on Opening Up of Dumpsite Enforced
Governor George Natembeya has ordered the reopening of the Kitale dumpsite, which had been closed due to obstructions caused by garbage collectors who were dumping waste along the roadside.
CEC Sam Ojwang, accompanied by Chief Officer Dorothy Nyukuri and Tuwan Ward MCA Francis Were, visited the site and discovered that the dumpsite was not actually full beyond its capacity. Instead, the entrance to the dumpsite had been blocked by the garbage collectors’ actions.
The CEC reiterated the department’s commitment to addressing the Machinjoni dumpsite issue. He emphasized that the 10-acre piece of land allocated for the dumpsite is sufficient, and the department only needs to enhance its management practices.
The area MCA, Francis Were, applauded Governor Natembeya and the Department of Environment for their quick response to the complaints received from residents. He also expressed the County Assembly Environment Committee’s readiness to engage in further comprehensive discussions on effectively managing the dumpsite, including enacting by-laws to ensure proper waste disposal practices among residents.
The committee has already introduced a bill in the county assembly to this effect. This demonstrates the local government’s dedication to addressing the environmental concerns raised by the community.
