Barton College
Eldoret Baraton College was established in the year 2007 in Nandi County. It is the only college in Western Kenya that offers an animal health and production program.
The college has already been registered by the Kenya Veterinary Board. You can enroll for the certificate course in animal health and production at the Eldoret Campus or through virtual learning.
Livestock Training Institute, Griftu- Wajir
This is one of the institutions under the State Department of Livestock. The Institute trains pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in different courses. It offers a certificate in animal health and range management and an upgrading course to a diploma in animal health and production.
Kenya YMCA College Agriculture and Technology (KYCAT)
KYCAT is registered by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority. The Certificate in animal health and Production course is an entry-level program designed to introduce students to the basics of animal health. Bukura Agricultural College
Bukura Agricultural College grew from the former Bukura Institute in 1974 under the Ministry of Agriculture with the mandate of offering certificate courses in Agriculture. In 1992, the Institute’s status was upgraded from awarding certificate courses to awarding Diploma courses in Agriculture and renamed Bukura Agricultural College (BAC).
Following the enactment of the Bukura Agricultural College Act, Cap.348 of 1999, BAC became a state corporation under the then Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The College is currently operating as a State Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation
Ahit, Kabete, Nairobi
The Animal Health and Industry Training Institute (AHITI) Kabete, was started at the present site in 1965 as a project of the government of Kenya, the Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Initially, the project was designed for five years, but was later extended for another period of two and a half years. The objective of the AHITI project was to provide training for middle-grade technicians and field extension staff in livestock and related disciplines. The project was part of a wider scheme of development of the livestock industry in East Africa. This was to be achieved through availing training to trainees from East African countries. Other English – peaking countries in Africa were also allowed to provide trainees.
The plan visualized facilities for 100 trainees. The first President of the Republic of Kenya, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, officially opened the Institute in 1966. It was fully handed over to the Government of Kenya in 1973.
Requirements For Diploma in Animal Health and Production
For you to enroll for a degree in animal health or veterinary medicine, you should score a minimum of C+ in KCSE with at least C+ (plus) in Biology or Biological Sciences and Chemistry.
For a Diploma in animal health or veterinary medicine, you need to have scored a KCSE mean grade of C and at least grade C in Biology/Biological Sciences, C– in Chem/Physical Sciences, C- in Math/Agriculture, and C- in Eng/Kiswahili.
For a certificate Course the minimum entry requirement is a KCSE mean grade of C- and a minimum of C- in biology and biological sciences.
The certificate courses take 2 years to complete while diploma courses take 3 years. A bachelor’s degree program takes four years to complete.
