New Year Message From President, AAK
2023 has been a year that has tested the construction industry with the steady increase in materials translating to a rise in the overall cost of construction yet still the industry remained robust and experienced a slight growth evidenced by the value of projects registered by NCA and approved by the various counties. As you wind up the year, I invite you to catch up with on our latest report on the Status of the Built Environment 2023.

The strength and unity of our association has remained robust despite the challenges experienced with the economic downtimes and slow growth of the economy. We have continued to advocate for the various professions to be included in government projects especially the Affordable Housing Programme and also recognition by statutory bodies which we hope to make a reality for the emerging professions in 2024.
The association remained robust in its activities and increased value for membership through our CPDs and the AAK Convention 2023/ IFLA World Congress 2023 which we co-hosted with the Architects Sweden. We also participated in international events such as exhibiting and speaking at the UIA World Congress in Copenhagen and AAQS ExCom meeting in Malawi and Namibia summed by the general assembly in Abuja, Nigeria.
This year’s engagement with Licentiates and Technicians, Landscape Architects, and Construction Project Managers in establishing a regulatory framework through BORAQS has been significant. As we move forward, we will remain steadfast in deepening our engagements with BORAQSs to champion the regulation of Licentiates, Landscape Architects, and Construction Project Managers.
Through all this, our membership has grown by almost 10%, a show of the value proposition that the association brings to individual and firm members and with this I invite you to renew your membership in order to grow the association and reap the benefits of our Business Membership Organization
Our event partners have also been supportive and we promise to make our Convention even bigger in 2024 when it returns to the Coast of Kenya.
Next year we look forward to launching our Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028 and thereby unlock more opportunities for the association to grow including a Co-Working Space, a revamped Placement Service and a bigger focus on the welfare of our members through the last expense cover.
The work could not have been possible without the dedication of the individuals who volunteer in the AAK leadership and the AAK secretariat who keep the wheels of the association going.
This year we launched our #MulikaMjengo Campaign alongside the Urban Thinkers Campus Activation event together with the 6-year long running #JeUnaMjengo Campaign. Another Initiative that got off the ground was the #GrowAClassroom Campaign during the national
Tree Growing Day and we can already see fast growth with a virtual exhibition that ran during COP28 in Dubai. We also started off training on the Safari Green Building Index and are looking to have it mainstreamed in local projects.
The various programmes with our partners continue to create impact and influence policy. A special thanks to Habitat for Humanity International, KonKuey Design Initiative, Kenya Community Development Foundation & Kilimani Project Foundation for partnering with us to make a change.
