Governor George Natembeya has encouraged the youth in Trans Nzoia to actively participate in coffee farming.

During a farmer’s gathering on Monday, the governor expressed concern over the trend of young people abandoning this practice.

He stated the need for the elderly to motivate and guide the youth toward this lucrative opportunity.

The event, also attended by CS Simon Chelugui, saw Natembeya advocating for the government’s provision of subsidized fertilizer to enhance coffee cultivation.

He stated that it would contribute to the profitability of coffee farming in the region.

The governor called upon farmers to diversify their agricultural activities, cautioning against relying solely on maize cultivation.

He noted that depending solely on maize could not effectively alleviate the prevalent poverty in the area.

Currently, 80 percent of farmers in the region grow maize for both consumption and as a cash crop.

Natembeya assured the community that his government would persist in collaborating with farmers to improve both crop and livestock keeping.
