President William Ruto has assured farmers that Nzoia sugar company won’t be sold but a radical surgery will be done to make it self sustaining.

Ruto said the firm won’t be sold or privatized but there will be change of management to revitalize it.
“Leasing is the only solution to save the firm which was at the brink of collapsing,” Ruto said after releasing Sh1.6 billion for the payment of three months’ farmers’ salary.

He noted that Nzoia has been facing a myriad of challenges owing to poor management which will be sorted out soon.
Ruto affirmed his commitment to solving the problems facing five sugar companies in Western and Nyanza regions, including Nzoia, Miwani, Sony, Muhoroni and Sony sugar companies.

He said the government had written off Sh107 billion debts plus other statutory deductions owed by the five sugar firms with Nzoia leading with Sh54 billion.

Ruto warned politicians against using the factories for their own selfish political revival.
“I will deal with cartels and graft lords who have made a fortune out of the farmers’ sweat at Nzoia sugar and nobody will run down the factory again under my watch,” he stated.

The president said the government is set to release Sh500 million to improve cane development for increased raw materials.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed the president’s sentiments, saying leasing is the only solution to the problems at Nzoia sugar company.

“There is a problem, farmers and workers have not been paid for a long time,” Gachagua said.
Several leaders were present during the event, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah, Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany, members of Parliament and MCAs.
