Mwea MP Paints a Perspective on Flash Floods in Mwea

0

It is with deep concern that I acknowledge the devastating impact of the excessive rainfall and flash flooding that has recently hit Mwea Constituency. The heavy downpour experienced in our area has led to significant damage to paddy fields and surrounding storage facilities, posing a severe threat to the well-being of our residents and our commodities.

Regrettably, the recent warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicates the possibility of further intense rainfall in the coming days, which could exacerbate the already dire situation.

I wish to emphasize that this flooding could have been prevented had the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) heeded my repeated calls to unclog and desilt the drainage canals in the area. Proper maintenance of these canals is crucial for effective water management and flood prevention. It is disappointing that these calls were not given the attention they deserved, resulting in the avoidable damage we are currently witnessing. I call upon NIA to promptly and decisively address the consequences of this calamity and assume accountability, considering that farmers have been consistently funding these services.

In response to this crisis, I have also engaged with various authorities to seek immediate assistance in both minimizing and resolving the flooding problem. I am committed to working tirelessly to ensure that our community receives the support and resources needed to overcome this challenge.

I assure the residents of Mwea Constituency that I will continue to advocate for their interests and work towards long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences of such disasters.

Thank you.

Hon. Mary Maingi,
MP, Mwea Constituency
