Government Halts Union Dues Deductions for KMPPDU Amidst Disobedience to Court Orders
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that the government will cease deducting union dues from members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPPDU) due to their continued defiance of court orders to end their industrial action.
Speaking yesterday, Secretary Kuria disclosed his participation in meetings held by the Whole-of-the-Nation Approach Committee, chaired by Head of the Public Service Felix Koskei. This committee has been tasked by the court with the responsibility of negotiating a return-to-work formula with doctors, operating behind closed doors.
Expressing his frustration, Secretary Kuria emphasized his ministry’s patience and efforts to accommodate the doctors’ union. However, he voiced his dismay at what he perceived as dishonest behavior during negotiations. He recounted instances where agreements reached during meetings were subsequently reneged upon, describing such actions as unacceptable.
Secretary Kuria’s involvement in the negotiation committee stems from his ministry’s responsibility for human resources matters across the government. He expressed incredulity at the lack of honesty displayed by individuals he expected to uphold the highest ethical standards, particularly within the medical profession.
Characterizing the union’s behavior as humiliating, Secretary Kuria declared an end to what he termed a “circus” of perpetual discussions. He emphasized that the government could not continue negotiations indefinitely, especially in the face of repeated breaches of trust.
In light of these developments, the government has taken the decision to halt the deduction of union dues from KMPPDU members until further notice. This action serves as a response to the union’s failure to comply with court orders and engage in meaningful negotiation processes.
As negotiations between the government and KMPPDU continue, Secretary Kuria urged all parties to uphold the principles of honesty and good faith in their dealings. He reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving the ongoing dispute in the interest of public health and the well-being of all citizens.
