In a groundbreaking move to tackle the critical issue of safe drinking water accessibility in Kenya, Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO), a stalwart in women’s rights advocacy with over 70 years of dedicated service, has joined forces with 4Life Solutions SEZ (4LS), an innovative Danish-founded company based in Kenya. This strategic collaboration aims to democratize the availability of safe drinking water across the country, heralding a new era in public health, economic empowerment, and climate resilience.

Caroline K. Githinji, Managing Director Africa at 4Life Solutions, underscored the urgency of the initiative, emphasizing that safe drinking water is not just a necessity but a fundamental right. Githinji highlighted the devastating impact of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid, stressing the thousands of lives lost annually due to the lack of access to safe water.

At the launch event, Mrs. Rahab Muiu, National Chairperson of Maendeleo ya Wanawake, urged women to embrace the SaWa Cans, an innovative tool for water purification. Muiu highlighted the efficiency and sustainability of SaWa Cans, which utilize solar power for water purification, offering households a lifeline against waterborne diseases while reducing reliance on firewood and other resources.

The partnership between MYWO and 4Life Solutions aims to elevate household health standards, advance women’s economic empowerment, and deploy sustainable, climate-smart solutions. Recognizing the disproportionate impact of water-related diseases on young women and children in rural areas, MYWO outlined its strategy to economically empower women through the distribution and sale of SaWa Cans.

Solomon Muigai Kamau, Commercial and Partnerships Sales Director at 4Life Solutions, emphasized the innovative solution offered by SaWa Cans, which utilize solar water disinfection (SODIS) technology to effectively purify water. Kamau highlighted the affordability and accessibility of SaWa Cans, priced at Kes.1000 per unit, making them a viable solution for households across Kenya.

MYWO also revealed plans to establish a robust reverse logistics system, incentivizing users to return SaWa Cans after three years for recycling, promoting sustainability. The partnership between MYWO and 4Life Solutions SEZ represents a significant step towards achieving universal access to safe drinking water in Kenya, promising a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future for all.

Through collaborative action, MYWO and 4Life Solutions SEZ embark on a journey towards progress, empowerment, and Safe Water, transforming lives and communities across Kenya.
