Cabinet Secretary Leads Tree Planting Initiative in Kajiado County
Today, in a bid to address environmental challenges and combat climate change, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Honorable Zachariah Njeru, EGH, spearheaded a significant tree planting initiative in Namanga, Kajiado County.
Accompanied by Principal Secretaries Julius Korir (Water and Sanitation) and Ephantus Kimotho (Irrigation), the Cabinet Secretary led a team of top officials from various ministries and local government representatives in planting tree seedlings along the scenic Namanga Hills. Notably present were officials from the Kajiado County Government, including the Deputy Governor, who actively participated in the tree planting exercise.
The initiative, which aligns with a Presidential directive, aims to plant and nurture 15 billion trees by 2032. Today’s efforts saw the planting of approximately 100,000 seedlings, marking a significant step towards achieving this ambitious goal. Notably, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation has adopted Kiambu and Kajiado counties for intensive tree planting activities.
Addressing the media after the event, the Cabinet Secretary expressed gratitude to the various stakeholders involved, including the support from the Ministry’s SAGAs, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF). He also commended the enthusiastic participation of local residents, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
As part of the Ministry’s corporate social responsibility, the Cabinet Secretary pledged to provide fruit seedlings to the local community, aiming to incentivize them to actively engage in environmental stewardship. Furthermore, he announced plans for impromptu site visits to ensure the proper maintenance of the planted seedlings, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to the long-term success of the initiative.
The event witnessed the presence of top Ministry officials, including Water Secretary Eng SAO Alima, Secretary Administration for State Department of Irrigation David Yatich, Secretary Administration for State Department of Water and Sanitation Stephen Kihara, and Irrigation Secretary for State Department for Irrigation Eng Vincent Kabuti, among other senior dignitaries.
With such concerted efforts and collaboration, Kenya is taking significant strides towards building a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
