In a significant move aimed at revolutionizing Kenya’s tea industry, stakeholders have embraced the government’s initiative to develop a distinctive tea brand, elevating farmer incomes and bolstering the country’s global tea presence. President William Ruto’s announcement regarding the branding and promotion of Kenya’s tea has garnered widespread support from industry players.

Patrick Ngunjiri, Director at Iriani and Gitugi tea factories in Othaya, echoed the sentiments of President Ruto, expressing unwavering commitment to enhancing the tea sector. He emphasized the importance of branding in a competitive market, highlighting the potential for increased revenue through brand sustainability.

Addressing the current scenario where Kenya exports unprocessed tea at lower prices compared to other producing nations, Ngunjiri stressed the urgency of establishing a Kenyan tea brand. He welcomed President Ruto’s challenge to set up common user facilities, aiming to export 60% of processed and branded tea within three to five years.

Ngunjiri attributed the remarkable bonus payment of Ksh 57 per kilo at Gitugi factory to embracing orthodox and specialty tea, urging other factories to follow suit. He emphasized President Ruto’s commitment to supporting farmers, citing initiatives such as subsidized fertilizers to enhance tea production.

Highlighting the gains of recent reforms, including revised agreements between tea factories and KTDA, Ngunjiri emphasized benefits such as increased yields and reduced management fees. The reforms have also fostered democratic practices in the election of factory directors, ensuring transparency and accountability within the industry.

The collaborative efforts between the government, stakeholders, and farmers signify a transformative era for Kenya’s tea sector, promising improved livelihoods and sustainable growth. With a concerted focus on branding, value addition, and farmer support, Kenya is poised to assert its dominance in the global tea market, securing better returns for its tea farmers.
