Empowering MSEs in Kilifi County: Ukulima Bora Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society Thrives

In a bid to bolster the agricultural sector and uplift small-scale enterprises in Kilifi County, the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) recently embarked on a transformative journey with the Ukulima Bora Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society in Mtondia.

With approximately 40 dedicated members, the cooperative, nestled within Kilifi North Sub-County, has emerged as a beacon of hope for dairy farmers in the region. Thanks to a strategic partnership between the County Government of Kilifi and the KCB Foundation, the cooperative witnessed a remarkable expansion. Initially receiving 15 cows, their herd has now flourished to an impressive count of about 60.

The impact of this collaboration has been profound. Each registered farmer now collects an average of 40 liters of raw milk daily, significantly enhancing their economic prospects. Furthermore, the cooperative serves as a vital hub for storage and market access, addressing the logistical hurdles faced by farmers residing in remote areas far from urban centers.

Buoyed by their success, the Ukulima Bora Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society is eager to extend its reach and impact. Seeking MSEA registration, they aspire to attract more farmers into their fold, thereby facilitating capacity-building training and unlocking increased market opportunities. Additionally, plans are underway to acquire essential equipment such as pasteurizers, coolers, and ATM dispensing machines, which will further streamline operations and enhance service delivery to shops and supermarkets.

Diversification remains at the forefront of the cooperative’s agenda. In addition to their core milk production, they have ventured into value addition, offering a range of products including yoghurt, cheese, maziwa mala, and pasteurized milk. Undeterred by challenges, the cooperative is poised to explore new frontiers, eyeing the lucrative sectors of butter and ghee production.
