Inspector David Maina, a dedicated officer with the Nairobi Police Department, found himself at the center of tragedy during Tuesday’s protest in Nairobi’s CBD. While patrolling amidst the demonstrations against the Finance Bill, tragedy struck when a tear gas canister exploded, resulting in the loss of both of Maina’s arms.

The incident occurred when Inspector Maina inadvertently failed to release a detonated canister, leading to a catastrophic explosion that forever altered his life. In a poignant statement to reporters, Maina expressed the profound impact of the incident, particularly on his ability to perform daily tasks and communicate this ordeal to his family.

“This has fundamentally changed my life because I won’t be able to do the things that I used to do. I’m also unsure how I will explain this to my children,” he lamented.

The severity of Maina’s injuries prompted swift action and expressions of support from various public figures. Babu Owino, the MP for Embakasi East, visited Inspector Maina and Corporal Moraa, another injured officer, affirming solidarity and praising the efforts of medical staff at Nairobi West Hospital in their care.

“While Chief Inspector Maina suffered terrible injuries, we commend the dedicated efforts of the doctors and nurses at Nairobi West Hospital,” MP Babu Owino remarked.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua also visited Inspector Maina, emphasizing the broader community impact of recent unrest and advocating for unity and resilience during such challenging times.

“My visit underscores the profound impact of recent events on individuals and the community, highlighting the need for tolerance and unity,” Cabinet Secretary Mutua stated.

Despite affirming the right to protest, Secretary Mutua cautioned against demonstrations driven solely by activism and propaganda. He urged police officers not to allow themselves to be used to suppress Kenyan citizens’ freedom.

Inspector David Maina’s plight serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those in law enforcement during public demonstrations and has sparked discussions regarding safety protocols and the role of tear gas in crowd control measures.

As Inspector Maina embarks on a long road to recovery, his story resonates as a symbol of sacrifice and resilience amidst the ongoing dialogue surrounding civil liberties and public safety in Kenya.
