In Konoin sub-county, Bomet, a traditional stronghold of tea farming, residents are now looking to diversify their agricultural pursuits by venturing into avocado farming. This shift comes as local leaders and farmers recognize the need to explore alternative crops to bolster their income streams amidst changing market dynamics.

Brighton Yegon, Member of Parliament for the area, highlighted the historical significance of tea farming in the region but stressed the importance of adapting to new opportunities. “We can no longer solely depend on tea farming for our sustenance. It is time to diversify our agricultural activities and take advantage of the booming avocado market,” remarked MP Yegon.

Avocado farming has been promoted as a viable option due to its lower risk profile and ease of management. It requires minimal input costs and maintenance while enjoying high demand both domestically and internationally, particularly in markets such as the European Union and China.

Jane, a resident of Konoin, expressed optimism about the initiative, believing it will positively impact the community’s standard of living. “If we receive support in terms of farming education and access to reliable markets, this initiative will benefit everyone,” she affirmed.

Kenya’s avocado season presents a lucrative opportunity for farmers, with two fruitful periods spanning from March to September and November to January. This dual seasonality allows farmers to maximize their profits by complementing avocado harvests with tea production.

Local authorities and agricultural experts have welcomed the shift towards avocado farming, viewing it as a sustainable strategy to enhance rural livelihoods and economic resilience. With proper support and infrastructure, Konoin sub-county aims to establish itself as a hub for both tea and Hass avocado production, tapping into diverse market opportunities and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.
