As the Director of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board in Uasin Gishu County, Koiya arap Maiyo has seen firsthand the devastating impact of alcohol and drug abuse on our youth and communities.

From broken families to lost opportunities, the toll is grave and pervasive.

“Our community suffers greatly from the scourge of alcohol and drug abuse,” Maiyo solemnly states. “It affects both the young and the old, tearing apart the fabric of our society.”

Uasin Gishu County has not been silent in this fight. Maiyo proudly commends the efforts of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in their relentless battle against substance abuse. “Their dedication is commendable, and we stand united in this journey.”

The availability of illicit brews and ease of transportation have exacerbated the problem, particularly among the youth. Maiyo recently visited Moi University’s Teaching and Referral Hospital to benchmark their approaches to mental health and substance abuse, seeking innovative strategies to combat this crisis.

“We have admitted many addicts into rehabilitation programs,” Maiyo acknowledges, highlighting the county’s commitment to recovery and rehabilitation. Plans are underway to establish two modern laboratories dedicated to aiding men and women in their path to sobriety, underscoring Governor Bill’s commitment to addressing substance abuse in his governance agenda.

“In every single family, there is at least one person suffering from drug abuse,” Maiyo reveals, emphasizing the pervasive nature of the issue. He urges the community to join forces, stating, “We must unite our efforts to save future generations.”

To curb easy access to alcohol, Maiyo announces tightened licensing regulations. “We are enforcing stringent regulations to ensure licensed establishments uphold responsible practices,” he asserts, aiming to curb abuse and promote responsible consumption.

Engaging opinion leaders and students in educational campaigns is another pillar of their strategy. “We are educating our youth on the dangers of substance abuse,” Maiyo declares. “Education is key to changing attitudes and behaviors.”

Maiyo assures the community that they have ample human resources, trained and dedicated officers, to deliver this crucial message effectively. Collaboration with stakeholders and enforcement agencies is essential to combat illicit alcohol trafficking and ensure community safety.

“As a county, we are resolute,” Maiyo concludes. “Together with our partners, we will continue to work tirelessly to create a safer, healthier environment for all.”
