Kilifi Leaders Demand Release of Arrested Youths Amidst Protests
Tensions are mounting in Kilifi as local leaders escalate their calls for the release of youths recently arrested during protests against the Anti-Finance Bill 2024. The controversy centers on allegations of unjust detainment after some of the youths had been previously freed by court order.
Senator Stewart Madzayo, a prominent voice in the region, condemned the re-arrests as a clear case of victimization. “It is unacceptable to detain individuals who have already been cleared by the court without any new charges,” Senator Madzayo stated firmly, reflecting the growing frustration among Kilifi residents.
Accompanying him in the plea for justice was Member of Parliament Amina Munyazi, who highlighted the broader implications of the arrests on national unity and government-youth relations. “These actions undermine the President’s agenda of constructive youth engagement,” Munyazi emphasized, urging the Kilifi police to uphold fairness and respect the court’s decisions.
The outcry follows reports that ten youths, previously released by the Kilifi Law Court, were once again taken into custody. This development has sparked widespread concern and prompted local leaders to call for restraint in the use of law enforcement for political ends.
Local authorities are now under pressure to address the situation swiftly and ensure adherence to due process while navigating the delicate balance between law enforcement and civil liberties.
